Afternoons are nightmares!!

My 12 week old baby started crying in an afternoon from about 3/4 o'clock until I give him his bath at 5.30. It is really upsetting as he sounds in pain and it is almost impossible to comfort him. we have been trying infcol for colic but it doesn't seem to really help. He also seems really hungry and wondered about giving a little bit of baby rice but am worried he is still too young. I'm finding it quite difficult to cope as my partener gets home from work late and I have to cope on my own. Any tips for getting to grips with a crying baby??
