With my first daughter, Sian, we made every mistake possible with her bedtime, so with Erin who is now 15 months we were determined that she went to sleep on her own in her cot. With Sian she used to fall asleep having her bottle or we cuddled her asleep then she went to bed. When we wanted to change the habit it took a while but we managed it after a lot of hard work, we used to put her in her cot awake but stay with her, then we progressed to moving away from her, then leaving the room but going straight back to her when she cried, me or my husband used to take most of the evening putting her to bed. I don't like controlled crying so I did my own where as we put her in the cot and walked out, then left her for short times, like one minute, then 2 and so on, it did work, though to be honest we still have sleep problems with Sian so I think she probably always will, now at 4 she goes to bed but always shouts us so we have to go back up to her at least once, where as Erin goes to bed and we don't hear from her until morning unless she is ill. I would definately suggest breaking the habit as soon as possible, try setting a bed time, mine go to bed at 7.00, then work up to it, they get their pyjamas on, have their milk and story then go up clean their teeth and go to bed, always put them to bed at the same time, no matter how long it takes to get them to sleep. Hope this reply isn't too long! and hope it helps.
