Hi, I recently had the downs blood test and posted a discussion on here, here is the link: http://www.cowandgate.co.uk/en/forum.asp?chco_id=16242
There's one particular poster who upset me a little, so try to ignore that one, you will know when you read it.
There are various tests available, and it varies where you live whether or not you get offered them for free or they cost. It is well worth talking over your concerns with your midwife - even at this early stage. Don't feel bad or that you are wasting her time, she won't mind. I had the blood test at about 16 weeks, but there is another (which I think is the Nuchal Scan) which you can have much earlier, like the stage you are at now I think. Your health authority may charge, but if you are that worried it might be worth it for peace of mind. We decided to have the blood test because we wanted to be prepared, I also wanted family and friends to be prepared, it's a big thing, having a child with learning disabilites, whatever they are, and you are right, it wouldn't stop you loving it unconditionally, but there are practical matters to consider. I'm 35 by the way and got my low risk result back today, so it's not just age that increases the risk. Good Luck, let me know how you get on, and get in touch with the midwife, even if you haven't yet so far. Louise xxx
