You don't have to tell your boss till you are ready - I think as long as you tell them by the time you are 20 odd weeks you'll be fine! I told mine straight away but that's only because I had a few complications... Most people wait until their 12 weeks is up and they are in the "safe zone"... Its really up to you.
Re: your holiday. It depends on when your holiday year runs as opposed to your financial year (I think!) but you are entitled to take all holiday due to you. i.e. if your holiday year starts on 1 April, you will be entitled to take your full holiday entitlement - you can either take these days before you start your official maternity leave or you can take them before or after you return from Mat Leave.
With mine, our holiday year runs from 1 November. I'm entitled to take 26 days holiday a year. I took a week off last week, have next Friday off (i.e. 6 days) and am taking the remainding 20 days from 15 December. My Maternity Pay then kicks in on 20 January. As I'm having a full year off, it means that when I get back, I'll have another 26 days to take before 31 October. If that makes sense!!
Anyway, your boss will explain it all to you when you give them notice of your pregnancy.
Hope this helps x
