      Vitamin D, whatever the weather

      Vitamin D and the weather

Vitamin D is often called the sunshine vitamin, however it can be difficult for children to get the vitamin D they need from this natural source. This is because, although our bodies can produce it when the sun shines on our skin, we cannot absorb it even if it's sunny between October and March. And since children’s delicate skin need sun protection, this can reduce the amount of vitamin D they produce.

      Vitamin D and diet

It is only possible to get vitamin D from a few foods, like salmon and other oily fish. Unfortunately, despite their health benefits many little ones don't find these foods that yummy. This means that, on average, children in the UK only get 27% of their daily dietary vitamin D from food sources1.

The effects of vitamin D deficiency

As well as being important for the healthy growth and development of children's bones and teeth, vitamin D insufficiency has been linked to conditions such as multiple sclerosis and osteoporosis later in life.

Cow & Gate Growing Up Milk is specially formulated to help meet the nutritional needs of your little one, providing them with hard-to-get nutrients such as vitamin D when used as part of a balanced, healthy diet.

Just 2 x 150ml beakers a day provide at least 100% vitamin D2. Perfect for your little ray of sunshine! Alternatively, you can also help top up your little one's vitamin D using vitamins D drops.

      Introducing the Vitamin D Mission

Cow & Gate Growing Up Milk is proud to support the Vitamin D Mission, in partnership with the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Its aim is to eradicate vitamin D deficiency in all UK children under five.

The Vitamin D Mission website also has a handy vitamin D calculator to help you work out if your little ray of sunshine is getting enough of that all-important sunshine vitamin. Then your toddler can get on with doing what they do best – filling their days with lots of giggles, cuddles, games, and adventures.
