As your baby’s digestive system continues to mature, the valve at the top of their stomach is still weak, allowing milk and stomach acid to come back up your baby’s oesophagus.
Cow & Gate anti-reflux formula is thickened with carob bean gum (a natural thickener), which thickens your baby’s feed in their bottle and continues to thicken in your baby's tummy, helping to keep their feed to stay down. Because this formula is thickened, it’s best to use a fast-flow bottle teat, and, as with any change of formula milk, you should allow a settling period of up to 2 weeks.
It’s not known exactly what causes colic in babies. However, research suggests that it could be caused by a number of digestive issues such as cow’s milk allergy or finding food harder to digest1.
Cow & Gate Comfort formula contains a lower level of lactose, partially hydrolysed (partially broken down for your baby) whey milk protein and GOS/FOS oligosaccharides*, making it easier for your baby to digest. If you decide to change your baby’s formula milk, it can take a little time for your baby to adjust, so allow for a 2-week settling period.
Yes, Cow & Gate Anti-Colic Milk is thicker, as it contains potato and corn starch. That’s why we advise using a variable flow teat when feeding your baby.
